Board Games for One (Or More!)

April 13, 2020

As we begin week three of our quarantine, those singles out there have been on our minds. This week, we’ve compiled a list of games that can be played by just you! Even if you do have family or friends staying with you, if you can’t get them to join in the fun then that’s no problem and your own “bored” self isn’t out of luck. Hopefully they can serve as a welcome change to some of your hobbies that may be getting a bit stale by now. If these titles aren’t in our online shop, you can still give us a call and we can order and ship it to you!

Terraforming Mars: As you can probably guess from the title, this game revolves around contributing to the advancement of the terraforming of Mars in the distant future. When playing solo, you must achieve satisfactory scores in the development of water, oxygen and temperature to beat the game. It has enough cards to keep the variety interesting through multiple play-throughs, and you’ll need to develop a good strategy to win!
1-5 Players, 2 Hour Playing Time, Ages 12+

Tapestry: In this game you weave a story by creating the civilization, starting at the beginning of humankind and reaching into the future. In the solo gameplay, you compete against two different automata to make the most successful civilization. It’s a gorgeous game by Stonemaier Games (and designed by Jamey Stegmaier) that you’ll enjoy whether you win or lose.
1-5 Players, 1-2 Hours Playing Time, Ages 12+

Gaia Project: This game also centers around terraforming, but focuses on several different planets and you play as one of fourteen different factions competing to develop the worlds. Single player in this game is especially challenging, and you won’t find that winning is too easy. You play against an Automata faction instead of another player, which adds a randomness to the game that isn’t present with another person playing.
1-4 Players, 1-2 Hour Playing Time, Ages 12+

Scythe: Set in an alternate history 1920’s era, engine building game that revolves around achieving a goal with different resources. You represent a character from one of five factions of Eastern Europe who are attempting to earn their fortune and claim their faction’s stake in the land around the mysterious “Factory.” This one even comes with a separate solo play rulebook, making a highly developed single player experience that you can come back to time and time again.
1-5 Players, 90+ Minutes Playing Time, Ages 12+

All of these games (and more we can suggest if you call!) can fill up more than one afternoon while keeping you engaged and challenged. If you’re looking to add some extra flavor to your days at home, any of these are great options and are guaranteed to keep you occupied for hours at a time.
