Creator Spotlight: Rick Remender

September 17, 2020

If you’ve stopped by to peruse our graphic novel shelves or comics section, there’s a fair chance you’ve run across the name Rick Remender. Remender is a prolific writer and artist who has created many fabulous titles, with a particular flair for science fiction and horror stories.

Rick began his career in animation, working on projects such as The Iron Giant, and progressed from there to indie comics in the later 1990’s, including several issues of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Throughout the 2000’s he was involved in numerous projects with Image and Dark Horse Comics which put his career on the map. Perhaps the best known of these works is Fear Agent, a pulpy sci-fi series starring a rugged alcoholic Texas spaceman!

In 2009 Remender signed a contract with Marvel, and turned his attention to more mainstream (but still off center within the Marvel Universe) characters such as Punisher, Uncanny X-Force and Uncanny Avengers. Alongside these works he was able to publish several creator owned titles with Image, including Tokyo Ghost, Black Science, Deadly Class and LOW. Deadly Class went on to become a TV series where Remender served as a show-runner. All of these series are worth reading, but the one we’d recommend most is his team up with Sean Murphy, Tokyo Ghost. Murphy’s signature sketchy but detailed style mashes up perfectly with Remender’s futuristic world of technological addiction that is also surprisingly touching.

We can’t wait to see what Rick’s next projects will be, as they are sure to bring adventure, trepidation, humor and heartfelt moments to many readers. LOW is set to wrap up later this year, so it’s also a perfect time to check out this underwater thriller. Stop on by and we’ll be happy to set you up with some of his stories!
