SPOTLIGHT ON: IKORIA

April 30, 2020

The latest set for Magic the Gathering, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, is about to drop, and we are excited about what it has to offer! Wizards of the Coast describes this new set by stating:

“On the treacherous world of Ikoria, gargantuan beasts fight for survival while humans hide at the bottom of the food chain—forever in fear of the creatures beyond the walls and the human traitors known as “bonders” who believe the monsters misunderstood. Will you fight the behemoths at your door, or fight alongside them?”

There will be several new things to look forward to in the wild new monster world of Ikoria, including new planeswalker cards, a “mutate” ability, and Godzilla series monster cards!

The new planeswalkers announced are Vivien, Monster’s Advocate, Narset of the Ancient Way, and Lukka, the Coppercoat Outcast – check out their cards below!

The Mutate ability lets you combine creatures in a new way to build better monsters! You can cast Mutate in one of two ways – by casting it for its mana cost, or by mutating a creature already on the battlefield! It can only be cast on non-human targets. As this creature spell resolves it merges with the target card either on top of or underneath it, with the characteristics of the creature being the card on top but also having the abilities of all cards underneath it.

Godzilla Series Monster Cards: These monsters will appear in the set as alternate-art versions of existing cards and will be known as Godzilla Series Monster cards. Mike Turian, Principal Product Designer at WotC, stated, “A total of 19 cards were given this treatment and one card, the Buy-a-Box card, only exists in its Godzilla Series form, but each of the others has both an Ikoria card and a matching Godzilla Series card.” For example, the Godzilla card Mothra, Supersonic Queen, is the alternate version of the regular Luminous Broodmoth card.
